Canadice Lake
Did you know? The steep and forested shorelines of Canadice Lake used to be farmland, which has since been reclaimed as forest. Old cottages have been removed from the land surrounding the lake, but you may still be able to spot some ruined foundations along the way.
In 1873 construction began on the system that today still serves Rochester, NY with drinking water from Hemlock Lake. By 1908 the system had expanded to 3 conduits and 3 reservoirs. In 1917, to serve Rochester's growing demand for water, work began on a "Curved Dam" at the Canadice Lake Outlet where water is diverted through a 5 foot pipeline into Hemlock Lake, increasing Rochester's water supply by 25%. You can visit the curved dam by taking a short detour off a trail at the north end of this beautiful lake.
